Amautik Baby

The amautik. Ingeniousness Inuit invention.

Sally sewed this one, with a little help from mum-Tagalik, while she was living for four months with that family in Arviat, Nunavut. It's amazing to me how perfectly suited the amautik is for its purpose. Without stuggling to get flailing arms & legs into a contstricting snow suit straight-jacket, you can simply drop your kid as-is into your 'hood' and babe & mum are both happy. Arthur loves to go for walks in the amautik - he just stares up at the tree branches or stars.

If it gets really cold, the hood can be pulled up over baby and mom.
