Night Owl.

Here we are at 4:23 am at the kitchen table, eating toast as Arthur happily talks to a bold black & white fish wood-cut print in the living room. Every three nights or so Arthur 'can't go back to sleep' from 2-4am'ish. I actually tend to get a lot done during this time of his self entertaining ... wash/fold laundry or diapers, eat, rad. I just don't sleep. I thought we'd make it back to sleep tonight. I woke to the sound of his lips smacking. This is his first hunger que - nicer than a cry. 3:30 am: I was sure he needed a diaper change too, so off we went to tackle that first. He almost always sleeps through his diaper change ... knowing mom's stirring brings him milk. But then, he peed on himself. His eyes opened wide. And then I had to change his whole outfit - that did it. Now he's crying for that delayed milk. And then he eats so hungrily he's very full. Needs to burp, fart, and poop. And there you have it.

This all leads to a happy alert baby for a few hours.

Actually, today I think he knows that his Grandpa Schonfeld, uncles, and cousin Mark are waking, eating, burping, farting, pooping and then sleepily walking out to their deer blinds in the National Forest off of Block House Rd in Michigan's U.P. He'd like to be with them. It's probably cold, dark and very quiet once they finish their leaf-crunching walk to settle into their buckets & chairs. They'll probably let their eyes close until the morning light seeps in to the air and wakes the birds and squirrles.

What do you know? Arthur's closed his eyes again too. Back to sleep for a few
more hours.
